“Would someone like to explain to me exactly how this happened? I’ve got three apartments gutted by flames, a fried electrical system, an entire floor smoke damaged and dozens of angry people demanding she’s locked up for nearly burning their homes to the ground,” an angry, demanding voice boomed.

“Back off Ravius, now’s not the time. Look at the state of her, let me do my job and heal her.”

This voice was desperate, hysterical even.

“You can do that once you’ve answered my goddamn questions! You were supposed to be keeping an eye on her, so how the hell was this allowed to happen on your watch?”

“You know full well that I was in that meeting with you, I can’t babysit her twenty four hours a day.”

The harsh shouts penetrated the smog that had settled in my mind, the darkness slowly receding as I came to. Blistering pain quickly followed, all over my body and in the side of my head. I whimpered softly, feeling the hysteria rise in me again as the memory of the flames chasing me flashed to the forefront of my mind. Was the fire out? Did I hurt anyone? And more importantly, what in holy hell had just happened?

“Let me through dammit, she’s in pain! Do you want the place to catch on fire again? Don’t be a fool, Ravius.”

I was struggling to connect the dots and understand just what had happened. The acute anxiety was still present, blazing in the back of my mind and I struggled to suppress the broken cries escaping my mouth. Every limb felt like it was dipped in acid, the agonising sensation shattering any semblance of coherent thought in my mind. Small, soft hands brushed against my cheeks and my eyes were prised open gently. A light was shined in, causing me to flinch back.

“Lexi, breathe. It’s me, I’m just checking you for a concussion. You hit yourself real good back there.”

His light touch graduated down to my body and swept over my burning limbs, the accompanying tingling feeling sinking under my skin. I recognised the sensation from the hospital, when he’d healed me before, and I tried to breathe evenly whilst he did his job. I dared not look down for fear of what I would see. The pain was indication enough of the damage.

“Just lay still, you’ve got second degree burns all over your arms and legs. This is going to take a while but don’t worry. I’ve got you.”

I blinked rapidly, trying to force my blurred vision to clear. The ceiling above me was faded and yellow, the crystal chandelier dusty and wrapped in cobwebs.

A coughing fit seized me and I strained to breathe through my struggling lungs. Fingers wrapped tightly around my throat, the tingles sinking deep into my oesophagus and slowly working to ease the discomfort. I spluttered some more before managing a hoarse whisper.

“Is it out? The fire?”

Daniel’s blurry face appeared above me as he reluctantly shuffled over, joining me on the floor. He looked tense and refused to make eye contact with me as he answered my question.
